Edna Dorothy Holland Barger, age 97, of Somerset, passed away on Friday, December 6, 2024, at Hospice of Lake Cumberland Jean Waddle Care Center, just short of her 98th birthday,
She was born on December 19, 1926, in Bellevue, Ky., to James Holland, Jr. and Louise Brinkman Holland, both of whom preceded her in death.
Edna was united in marriage to Colburn Barger on November 30, 1946, in Bellevue, Ky. The couple were married for 69 years until his death on May 20, 2016. To this union, three sons were born, Douglas Colburn Barger, Terry Wayne Barger and Timothy Russell Barger.
Edna was a long-time member of the First Baptist Church of Somerset, where she served as the Sunday School Secretary, a Sunday School Teacher, a Girls Auxiliary Leader, and more. She served on the Bereavement Committee and was a member of the Women’s Missions Group. She worked on the Shoebox Ministry, The Walker Bag Ministry and many others. She enjoyed knitting and quilting. Prior to retirement, she worked at Hopewell Elementary in Ohio, First Baptist Church of Somerset and Dr. Betsy Reynolds’ office.
She is survived by two sons, Terry Barger, and his wife, Michelle of Somerset and Tim Barger, and his wife, Beth of West Chester, Ohio.
Edna is survived by three granddaughters, Adrienne (and Darren) Myers, of West Chester; Jessica (and Matt) Piper of Liberty Township, Ohio, and Sarah Cahill of Nashville. Two grandsons, Kyle (and Katie) Smith of White Oak, Ohio, and Eric Lawson of Portland, Ore., also survive. Three great-grandchildren, Lee McCoy, Victoria McCoy and Jordan Barger also survive.
Also surviving are her nephew, Greg Holland of Nashville; a niece, Cathy Wyatt of Batavia, Ohio and a daughter-in-law, Patty Graydon of Falmouth.
Preceding Edna in death are her parents; her son, Douglas Barger; her brother Jack Holland and an infant brother, Thomas Holland.
Visitation will be held on Friday, December 13, 2024, at 10:00 a.m. in the Chapel of Southern Oaks Funeral Home until funeral services at 1:00 p.m. with Dr. Bro. Jim Fields officiating. Musical selections will be by David Pendley.
Burial will follow in Mill Springs National Cemetery.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that donations be made to the Toni Pendley Nursing Scholarship Fund, C/O First Baptist Church, 128 N. Main St. Somerset, KY 42501.
