William Henry Kern

It is with great sadness that the family of William Henry Kern announces his passing on December 8, 2024. He would have been 97 years old on Christmas Day. He passed away peacefully in Carmel Valley, California.

Born on December 25, 1927, in Nuremberg, Germany, Bill was the son of Julianne Maedl Kern and Wilhelm Kern. He earned his medical degree at the University of Munich.

In 1952, Bill emigrated to the United States. In his early years in the U.S., Bill completed his residency and specialty training in pathology in Cincinnati and Denver and served in the U.S. Army Medical Corps in St. Louis from 1956-1958. He practiced at the Good Samaritan Hospital in Los Angeles from 1958-1992, where he was the Director of the Laboratory and twice served as Chief of Staff. During this time, he published over one hundred medical research papers and also enjoyed teaching at the USC School of Medicine.

Bill was a member of many clubs and civic organizations in California, including Los Rancheros Vistadores and the Old Capital Club in Monterey. He loved horseback riding, fishing, hunting, skiing, hiking, pack trips in the Eastern Sierra Nevadas, and playing chess with his friends. Most of all, Bill loved his family and enjoyed time with his grandchildren.

He is survived by his wife of 58 years, Lynn Williams Kern, his daughters Julie Kern Schwerdtfeger and Lisa Kern Griffin, his sons-in-law Andreas Schwerdtfeger and Richard Griffin, and his grandchildren Will and Annie Schwerdtfeger and Catherine, Elizabeth, and John Griffin.

Bill will be laid to rest at the California Central Coast Veterans Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the American Red Cross.
